Statement of the Town Mayor
Cllr Linda Wild, Town Mayor of Whitby said, "I was sorry to hear of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts as a town council, on behalf of the people of Whitby, are with the Royal Family at this sad time. Prince Phillip has been a prominent public person and a force of nature throughout my lifetime and has seemed like a permanent fixture in the establishment of our country for me - and anyone younger than me. I think we can all reflect on the values of companionship and stability that he has offered the Queen for seventy-three years. His service to the country was notable and spanned a Century of change and progress for the United Kingdom. His naval career and maritime history is particularly resonant for Whitby and for any coastal community. My sadness is with the Queen, who has lost her life-long companion. That depth of loss is always hard to bear. And my thoughts go out to the wider Royal Family, because the loss of a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent is always raw and real. But I think our overwhelming emotions for the Duke himself must be of thanks and of commemoration for what he achieved and what he meant to the nation over the course of a long and eventful life."
